On January 19th, we will make history when the dramatic adaptation of "Go, Tell Michelle: African American Women Write to the New First Lady" comes to the stage at Allen Hall Theater at the University at Buffalo. Adapted and directed by Robert Knopf, chair of the University's Theater and Dance Department, "Go, Tell Michelle: the Play" will feature three readers; Karima Amin, Peggy Brooks-Bertram and Barbara Seals Nevergold.

Seems like only yesterday that we published Go, Tell Michelle, our book of letters written by African American women to Michelle Obama. In actuality, that was back in January of this year, right before the Presidential Inauguration. The book received quite a bit of attention during that momentous time. Now it's good to see it appearing on critic Kam Williams' list of the Ten Best Black Books of 2009 (nonfiction category). Williams is a member of the New York Film Critics Online, Rotten Tomatoes, the African-American Film Critics Association, and the NAACP Image Awards Nominating Committee.
All month long at www.sunypress.edu we'll be featuring a selection of our titles in African and African American Studies. We'll try to feature a book or two from time to time on the blog as well, with links to the book page for more info. Today we have two for you: What's Wrong with Obamamania?, which explores the meteoric rise of Barack Obama with far-reaching—and disturbing—shifts in black leadership in post–Civil Rights America; and Go, Tell Michelle, our brand new collection of letters written by African American women to Michelle Obama.
Our new book of letters to Michelle Obama, Go, Tell Michelle, just won't quit. It's had a splendid month, due in no small part to the tireless work of the coeditors, Barbara Seals Nevergold and Peggy Brooks-Bertram, the contributors, SUNY Press staff, and everyone else involved with the project. It all came together at the right time and it's exploded into its own ever-evolving online community. First the book started showing up on various blogs before it was even published, and now its even started its own Facebook page and built a nice community of fans there in a short period of time. It's now into its third printing and the demand continues to grow. We've even heard that Michelle herself may have gotten her hands on a copy of the book. Sublime.
